Memphis Riverfront
Memphis, Tennessee
Client: Memphis Riverfront Development Corporation
Size: 12 miles
Completion: 2003
Currently, downtown Memphis is isolated from both its riverfront and Mud Island by railroad tracks, road networks, and topography. The plan breaks through these obstacles to make a seamless connection between city and river through the creation of a river-oriented public realm including streets, view corridors, river walks, and parks. Ambitious features include a landfill ‘bridge’ connecting downtown with Mud Island, the recreation of Memphis’s historic cobblestone landing, and a dam-engineered lake as the centerpiece for new residential neighborhoods.
