New York City has wanted to expand Midtown Manhattan westward to the Hudson River for over fifty years. Filled with bus yards, warehouses, a spaghetti of roads in and out of the Lincoln Tunnel, and a 30-acre rail yard, the area is by no means a ‘destination.’ After building over the rail yard, the plan makes four proposals: extending the #7 subway line into the area; an extensive open space network connected to the river (including two full-block parks adjacent to the Yards and the elevated High Line to the south); the proposed Convention Center/Jets Stadium complex over the Yards; and new zoning for greater density and taller buildings toward the river.
