Originally a commercial building built in 1869, this brick structure was altered in 1924 with a new facade; the interior, gutted. A reference photo of the original guided the extensive restoration of the original facade and stoop while the interior took its cue from a typical feature of 19th-century architecture - the loft. With the top floor loft under a new raised roof becoming the main living space, the kitchen and dining room are downstairs off the entry hall. With two bedrooms and south facing balcony windows, the house is now a spacious light-filled refuge from urban life. The restoration was given two preservation awards (from the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and from the Municipal Art Society of New York). It also received a National AIA PIA award.
