    Technology - Commons & Bridge

    Cambridge, Massachusetts

Cooper, Robertson helped MIT determine how best to utilize the northwest area of the campus, which is separated from the main campus by a railroad corridor. The area historically housed industrial and laboratory buildings but now contains some graduate housing and there are immediate plans for a new 500-room graduate residence hall. Cooper, Robertson's recommendations address both the area's industrial image as well as its physical and psychological separation by drawing existing residence halls and future sites together via a shared public commons green space. The Cooper, Robertson team also came up with several options for a pedestrian connection (both at-grade and above-grade) over the railroad right-of-way to artfully reconnect the graduate housing complex to the heart of the campus.
