Embarking on a ambitious initiative to construct three new science buildings, a campus center, and expanded student housing, Caltech hired Cooper, Robertson to draw up a campus-wide plan to both control growth and restore the sense of place found in Bertram Coodhue's original campus plan. Goodhue's planning principles, forgotten in recent campus work, were used to determine immediate and future building sites and set overall material and massing guidelines. The plan adds 1.3 million square feet to its existing 3.6 million square feet of space. New landscaping, patterns of planning, landscape restoration, and campus-wide light and signage systems are also set forth in the plan.
