• Colby College Museum of Art

    Waterville, Maine

In 2007, Colby received an extraordinary gift of 500 works of art from alumni Peter and Paula Lunder and decided to expand the Art Museum by 10,000 square feet to accommodate it. Cooper, Robertson developed both a comprehensive program and a master plan for the expansion and renovation to unify a complex that had already been augmented 3 times since the museum opened in the 1970s. A more visible and welcoming entrance was defined and the program addressed education, event, collection storage, and operation goals. The lobby was expanded, flanked by the permanent collection galleries on one side and special exhibit galleries on the other. A new pavilion and relocated art studios allow the permanent collection galleries to expand and improve their circulation. All is unified by the existing architectural language of brick pavilions joined by glass spans.
