Cooper, Robertson devised a master plan that updates the town center of this Maryland community, first planned by James Rouse in 1965. A woodland on the southern side of the town center is the primary organizing feature of the new neighborhood. New boulevards and passages with water courses and plantings inspired by the surrounding environment draw the site's natural systems toward the center of town and its new urban clusters, which add over 13 million square feet of new retail, office, civic, hotel, and residential space. A pedestrian corridor links Lake Kittamaqundi to an expanded shopping mall and new outdoor main street district via a series of landscaped terraces, increasing ease of use as well as the overall experience of the place for both residents and visitors.
