• Carlyle Master Plan

    Alexandria, Virginia

Located on a former rail yard, the 72-acre Carlyle Plan incorporates traditional urbanism of the area and serves as a model for urban infill adjacent to mass transit with mixed-use, mid-density development. There are four important features of the design: 1) extension of the street and block plan and building relationships of adjacent Old Town Alexandria; 2) a balanced system of streets, open spaces, and active street frontages instills a sense of place and encourages walking; 3) cars are hidden, parked below-grade; 4) phasing was carefully planned so that each of the five districts were completed one at a time.
