This "brownfield" redevelopment of a former racetrack is located on a regional rail line between San Jose and San Francisco. The new elevated Caltrain station on the site's western edge creates a focus for office and retail and greatly reduces car usage. A pedestrian-oriented network of parks and streets provides access to mixed-use and high density residential buildings, all of which are intended to achieve LEED certification. The plan also establishes links under the rail line and to the surrounding neighborhoods in order to create and sustain new uses throughout the site. Two weeks after the City of San Mateo Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval of the plan, the San Mateo City Council officially approved it on April 21, 2008.
